Blown-In Fiberglass Over Patchy Batt Insulation

The previous batt insulation in this 1970s Thousand Oaks rancher had shifted, compressed, and left bare spots you could see from the attic hatch. That’s a common story in older Conejo Valley homes. We pulled what was left of the compromised batts and blew Owens Corning fiberglass to R-38 across the entire attic floor, paying particular attention to the eaves where airflow was spilling into the living space. The result was a uniform thermal blanket with no gaps, and the homeowner noticed the difference in the hallway within two days.

Spray Foam Air Sealing on a Vented Attic Floor

The attic had insulation, but air was still moving through a dozen small penetrations: can lights, wire chases, and the plumbing stack. Fiberglass doesn’t stop air, so the upstairs bedrooms ran hot every August. We used Demilec closed-cell spray foam to seal the attic floor penetrations before adding a fresh loose-fill layer on top. That’s the order that matters, seal first then insulate. The upstairs temperature swing dropped noticeably, and the homeowner’s summer AC runtime shortened.

Rodent-Damaged Attic Remediation

This one surprised even us. A Wildwood neighborhood homeowner called about a musty smell and we found years of rodent traffic through the batting, with tunnels and droppings throughout the attic. The old fiberglass was removed, the attic was sanitized, and we installed fresh GreenFiber blown-in insulation to R-38. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s necessary. Clean material, proper depth, and air sealing around the entry points made this attic safer and the house noticeably quieter.

Rockwool Upgrade for a Newbury Park Townhome

A Newbury Park townhome had builder-grade batt insulation that had settled to less than half its original R-value in places. The owner wanted to stay in the home long-term and wanted something with sound deadening along with thermal performance. We installed Rockwool batts in the shared wall cavities and the attic floor. Rockwool is denser than standard fiberglass, which makes it a good fit for attached homes where you hear your neighbor’s TV. The temperature held steadier and the sound bleed dropped enough that the homeowner mentioned it before we even finished the job.

Air Sealing and Blown-In Upgrade in Lynn Ranch

The Lynn Ranch home had decent insulation in some spots but the recessed lights were leaking air like open windows. We air-sealed every fixture with rated covers, sealed the top plates and wire penetrations, then topped the whole attic with Knauf blown-in fiberglass to bring the assembly to R-38. The homeowner told us the master bedroom finally kept temperature overnight. That’s the kind of detail that tells you the seal did its job.

Attic Hatch and Access Treatment

Attic hatch insulation project, Thousand Oaks, CA. Photo placeholder: uninsulated hatch before, sealed and insulated hatch after.

This project started because the hallway always felt drafty. The attic hatch was a thin piece of plywood with no weatherstripping and no insulation on the back. Air was pouring through it year round. We built up the hatch with rigid foam, added weatherstripping around the frame, and sealed the trim gaps. It’s a small fix with an outsized effect. The hallway draft stopped and the homeowner’s thermostat stopped fighting the attic.
